The Wallaces lived a quiet life, with William working in insurance and occasionally lecturing in chemistry. They hosted musical evenings at their home in Liverpool, which painted a picture of a comfortable, normal family life. However, Julia's health was reportedly delicate, and she suffered from ongoing health issues. Despite their seemingly calm domestic life, their marriage was not without its complexities, and tensions arose as a result of Julia's health issues and other personal matters.

The peculiar sequence of events began on the evening of January 19, 1931, when Wallace, an insurance agent from Liverpool, received a mysterious phone call at his chess club.
